Merlin/Repo!Fic: Mirror, Mirror [Uther/Nathan]

[Mirror, Mirror | Crossover: Merlin/Repo! The Genetic Opera | Uther Pendragon/Nathan Wallas | U-Rated | 373words | comment_fic prompt: self-hatred]

There is a mirror that hangs within his chambers. It is made of gold-plated wood and stands the length of a full grown man. It is at all times covered, hidden beneath the thickness of a velvet throw. The mirror is made of magic. It is blasphemous to keep it, especially with his own unwavering laws on the subject, and yet he cannot bear to rid himself of it. He has looked into it once, and once only. And he has refused to look again until now.

The first time he looked he loathed, the sight before him too reminiscent of the life he already lives- a man in likeness to himself (a man who is but is not himself) living a life in which he too is deprived of his wife (the pain still too raw and fresh), a life left to raise his child alone in the best and only way he knows how, but knowing that his way will not always good enough (right enough) but unable to change his ways. The man in the mirror grieves, will always grieve. And loathe as he is to admit it, Uther himself grieves too.

The second time he looked,- looks,- it is with trepidation. His fingers tremble in their hold upon the velvet and his stomach twists with burning bile in the instant before he wrenches the fabric clear and stares into the depths of the mirror revealed to him- not so much a mirror as a looking glass as he looks past his own reflection and into the life of another.

“Nathan,” he breathes, the man already standing before the mirror, as if awaiting Uther’s call. He reaches out to touch at the glass. Nathan reaching out too, his fingertips pressing through into Uther’s world, as they touch against his own.

“Uther,” Nathan calls, his voice a broken hush as he allows his hand to be gripped and grabbed and his body pulled (willingly) from his life to this.

There are no more words. Only need and want and the knowledge that in the morning, when Nathan in gone and Uther throws the velvet back over the mirror, that they won’t loathe themselves anymore than they already do for wanting this.
